PERSONALITY – SO YOU WANT A SAMOYED:
Samoyeds are a highly intelligent family-oriented breed. They want
and need to be with their human family. They require human love,
interaction, exercise, direction, patience and a routine. When they
speak to you they speak in the Sammy Woooooo. This has often
been misunderstood as aggression, it is in fact a trait from their
ancestors a so called "Wolf Talk"
Samoyeds are well suited as a house pet, but MUST have daily
exercise to keep them in good weigh, shape, and mind. Exercise is
important to keep your dogs bones in top condition, as well as its
health. I try to take my Samoyeds out whenever I go out if my
destination allows it. This is a good for me and my Samoyeds and it
strengthens our bond. People are part their existence and they will
give back to them faithfulness, affection and great companionship
unconditionally.
Remember that the Samoyed was originally breed for the cold
Winters of Russia where temperatures went into the minus degrees,
consequently exercising your Samoyed in the heat of hot summers
without sufficient water and rest breaks in the shade is extremely
negligent. I recommend before you exercise your Samoyed in the
heat you educate yourself on bloat, signs, symptoms, prevention
and treatment. Additionally exercise will depend on the age and
medical condition of your Samoyed. If your Samoyed is going to
acquire the working titles a different exercise program will need to
be in place, speak with a professional trainer, handler, and breeder
active in the sport.
Bloat can happen at any time and on my links page you should
familiarize yourself with all the poisons and emergency first-aid
techniques. Many days have come where this gathered information
came in handy as there was no time for a veterinarian.
Example choking on a bone and the heimlich maneuver a bit different
in puppies, dogs, and humans.
(Read, read, listen, learn, and speak to your breeder you would if you had a
new baby? This is your new baby!)
Samoyeds are quite compliant and in other respects because of their
high intelligence they are easily trained. They love to work and learn
new things and are so eager to please.
Samoyeds are not intimidating towards strangers but will bark to
announce their arrival. Once strangers are accepted into the
household, they accept them unconditionally. The Sammy is gentle
with children, other pets the sick, and elderly.
Keep in mind that Samoyeds can be quite mischievous when bored,
and have a high activity level. Their self-determination gives them a
bit of stubbornness, however teaching them early on that you and all
family members are their FUN RESPECTED PACK LEADERS, and
setting a schedule with daily training filled with positive praise and
reinforcement will give you the devoted life long companion you
want.
(This is true I believe with any breed, whether you are a pet person or show
person.)
Samoyeds have an amazing intuition. We lost electric one cold night
and when my gang saw me go for the extra blanket and sweats at
3:00 am, they all quickly jumped up on my bed and shared their
warmth with me. The instinct from their origination was there, they
saw me cold and immediately - I had one on the right side, one on
my left side the other by my feet.
Yes I was warm and this is true. I did not need those extra blankets.
Samoyeds have been used in many sporting events as conformation,
obedience, agility, fly ball, herding, pack hike, weight pulling,
sledding, carting, tracking, in-line skating, animal assisted therapy,
musical freestyle-dancing with your dog, skijoring and are one of the
most popular breeds in the Working Dog Group in the dog shows in
the United States.
Do you or anyone in your household have allergies? Do you have a
good vacuum? Can you handle shedding? Keep reading – It is all in
the proper maintenance of the coat. Can you do it yourself and learn
properly? I am still learning. Can you afford the grooms?

BASIC TRAINING:
Samoyeds love to run and chase IT IS IMPORTANT that they be
trained to COME when called early on. Because they are a self
determined bred. It is important that they are trained to this
command and it is done in a fun manor. Your breeder will offer
suggestions, listen you can never have too much knowledge.
TRAINING CLASSES, BOOKS, ANIMAL PLANET TRAINING SHOWS
ARE ALL RECOMMENDED.
The next most important command should be a DOWN STAY. That
may one day save their life should they run across a street or
perhaps a young child or elderly visitor from an unwanted jump
which may hurt them unintentionally.
The last is the LEAVE IT command. How wonderful to prepare a
meal and eat in peace. If you drop a pill on the floor or of you had
something poisonous fall or on the street or floor your devoted
companion had better know this command or you will be faced with
a costly veterinarian bill or worse.
The above will also get you on your way to obtaining your "CGC
"Canine Good Citizen , "TDI" Therapy Dog International and Delta
Society Titles. If you choose not to obtain these titles you will have
a bond with not only your Samoyed, but your family, friends and
neighbors.
Training is not a chore it is a duty - It can be done several times a day!
While preparing a meal, doing dishes, getting dressed, lying in bed,
they are always looking to please and these few minutes and your
consistency in everyday training will bring a forever bond between
you and your companion.
REMEMBER ALL TRAINING SHOULD ALWAYS BE POSITIVE AND FUN.
Negative behaviors should be quickly distracted with positive
commands and quickly rewarded for the positive action via bait/
cookie or a kiss on their nose or a happy pet and scratch. Your
voice tone is everything.
LAST TIP ON BASIC TRAINING:
Please keep in mind to keep the training lessons short while
increasing the length gradually over time. Also always make sure all
lessons are fun otherwise your Samoyed will become bored and not
want to listen, which makes training harder. DO THIS DAILY!
PUPPY TRAINING MISTAKES:
Samoyed puppies have a huge ability to learn (far greater that of a
human). Remember that young puppies fail to remember with vast
speed so it is important that repeated reinforcement is used
(reminding the puppy everyday the way it should behave.)
When puppies leave the security of their mother and litter-mates,
they seek protection in a new pack and in the pack leader. They look
for their place in the pack and rules in which they can follow and be
safe.
Many people fail in giving the puppy this pack leader basic rules of
which they must follow. They make the mistake of immediately
responding to the puppy's demands, due to them being so cute and
cuddly. These people overlook the fact that this little bundle of fluffy
joy grows into a very big dog that, if not given the proper start in life
(set of laws of what it can and cannot do from day one.) They will
not have any control or respect from the start. If left without rules
your Samoyed puppy will promptly learn to be very challenging.
A commonly made mistake: A dog is put outside wants to come in,
so it whines the owner lets it in, this teaches the dog that whining
and stirring up a fuss will gain him re-entry into the house.
Instead of giving into the whining: Tough I recognize because it can
get very frustrating but it will be worth it in the end when you get a
magnificently obedient pet.
Educate the puppy (By leaving it outside) that the only way to come
back into the house is to stop whining (allow the puppy to re-enter
when it quiets down).
If your Puppy cannot find the pack leader in you, then your puppy
will assume pack leader status. If there are no rules to follow your
puppy will make up its own. Unfortunately a negligent owner
continually reinforces the puppy's decisions by allowing him to run
the house.
Remember a Samoyed does not understand or need aggressive
treatment at any time during its life. The solution to successfully
training a Samoyed is positive reinforcement.
Show your puppy how to behave by praising your puppy for doing
well and by using a firm clear voice when saying NO for disobedient
actions, but always show them what they are supposed to do after,
and whenever possible distract the unwanted behavior by asking for
a fun command with a reward of praise or a treat.
CRATE TRAINING:
The big controversy, I crate now train from day one. After the initial
bond I found the easiest way for me was going for car rides putting
a hard bone in the crate and well MUSIC CALMS THE SAVAGE
BEAST. So does motion. It is their safety their den. Just like your
traveling with a baby or a toddler.
There are some that think it is cruel, my dogs LOVE their crate, it is
all how you introduce it and present it. The breeder had them in
crates, and puppy pens this is ½ the job why break a good thing.
YOU THINK IT”S CRUEL? All I say is go to bed, sometimes I bait
them in, and sometimes they willingly jump right in. When crated at
home when I go out I leave the TV on, “Samoyeds love human
interaction” A TV is like leaving your baby in the playpen with a
Disney video to my guys.
Why not leave them gated in a room? Lets see Samoyeds or puppies
that are bored eat things magnets on the refrigerator, the electrical
cord, kitchen cabinets, carpet, jump and pull things off counter tops,
they have accidents, but not in their den. They know when I say go
to bed it is crate time. I wish I had this knowledge years ago.
I ask you would you leave a baby or a two or three year old alone
unsupervised while you went out or took a shower? Do you leave
your teenagers unsupervised while you go away?
Is it state law to use car seats? Some states have crate laws as
well? What if you were in a car accident?
Remember Samoyeds can be quite mischievous when bored, even
with the best of puppy proof/ baby proofing accidents happen. I had
to put the baby safety plastic plugs into my outlets and one was
eaten out while I did the dishes. The good news is that the power
to that outlet was off and I was five feet away putting dishes in the
dishwasher. Hmmmmmmmmm
Please go to all these links below listen think and learn, we all need
to find the technique which works for us and our companion. We all
have different personalities.
ANOTHER NOTE:
I just recently saw a show on Animal Planet where a woman put her
dog in the back of a pickup truck as she always did. Her dear puppy
jumped out and was lost for months. She was lucky to get her dog
back and it came back with issues as it had to survive out there
alone. The animal planet trainer came to her rescue and helped
solve her many problems. Food for thought!

GROOMING/ SHEDDING/ BATHING:
Your Samoyed puppy should already be in a habitual schedule to
being groomed by the breeder starting their grooming from the
instant that there is ample hair to groom. This is imperative because
you and your Samoyed will be doing this grooming for a long time to
come.
The easiest way to groom your Samoyed is to buy a grooming table
for your Samoyed to stand on. Never leave your dog unattended at
any time it can fall off the table and choke to death.
Nail trimming is another significant part of grooming and adjusting
your puppy to this weekly routine will prevent them objecting to this
as an adult.
Maintenance of your Samoyeds coat should be done as routinely as
if you were maintaining your own hairstyle. To keep your Samoyed
clean you will need a minimum of two hours per week to line comb
and keep their nails trimmed.
Un-spayed adult females usually blow coat (shedding) twice a year
around their heat cycle. Some females blow coat (shedding) prior to
their cycle, while others blow their coat about three weeks after.
Un-Neutered adult males usually blow coat (shedding) once a year
after the winter.
If your Samoyed is a puppy, is spayed or neutered, is geriatric, or is
blowing coat (shedding) you will need to allocate more time per
week. Why?
A Samoyed puppy will get grubby more often than the older dog.
Once a Samoyed has been spayed or neutered due to the lack of
hormones they will shed more frequently and have a thick or longer
coat.
The elderly Samoyed has more tender skin than the younger dog, it
is beneficial for you to groom/ line comb for 10-15 minutes each day.
During the times when your Samoyed is blowing coat (shedding) you
will want to invest a little more of your time in line combing in order
to get the old coat out as soon as possible.
People who own Samoyeds need to have good vacuums because
these dogs shed out all undercoat on a seasonal basis. I use a shop
vacuum.
THE BATH:
Have you purchased a show dog?
A pet?
Do you want your pet to look like a show dog?
Do you want to know if there are any parasites, fleas, ticks, skin
conditions?
Unless your dog is completely wet down and dried completely by the
same specialized Samoyed groomer on a weekly or bi-weekly basis
for show dogs or monthly basis for pets – You will not know.
Many thanks to Judi Elford and Ellen Lopiano for all they have given to me,
and Judi for this article Grooming for Supercoat.
Grooming for Supercoat
Grooming your Samoyed
You will find by reading the above, a little TLC will go a long way
and alleviate the shedding (blow coat). It is all in the care. Many
breeders will guide you and offer their opinions and techniques,
again everyday you will learn as will your Samoyed. However
negligence in the grooming process takes months to repair and hard
work, money and consistency.
Lastly, Microchip, follow the breeders feeding and vaccinations
instructions and educate yourself as much as you can. Every
BREEDER knows what is best for their wonderful creation.
Enjoy your Samoyed and they will always be your devoted friend and
companion.
When seen for the first
time one invariably hears
the spontaneous
appreciation of: "Oh, how
beautiful!"
It is quite a common thing
to see children stop a
Samoyed in the street and
hug it with the utmost
confidence and without
fear.
Could anything be more
beautiful or fascinating
than a Samoyed puppy?
Just like little teddy bears -
so soft and woolly that
they seem almost unreal.
They have their likes and
dislikes, their sense of
humor, and their sense of
duty; in fact, the Samoyed
is as near human as any
dog can be, and much nicer
and more patient than the
average human being.
It has often been
described as "the
fearless dog with
the human brain".
